Overcast Fall Engagement Session at Valley Forge Park

Helena and Hank’s engagement session at Valley Forge Park last fall was full of quiet beauty, golden leaves, and the kind of effortless joy that only comes from being completely at ease with each other.

It was one of those moody, overcast days that actually makes fall colors pop, and honestly? The soft light made their connection feel even more intimate and romantic.

These two met nine years ago—fresh-faced college freshmen moving into their dorms at West Chester University. As fate would have it, they lived on the same floor, and it didn’t take long for sparks to fly. In fact, they started dating just two weeks into the school year! They laugh now at how fast it all happened, but clearly, it was meant to be.

Fast forward to the summer of 2023, when Helena’s family planned a trip to Europe. She had maybe dropped a few hints about how dreamy it would be to get engaged during the trip, but Hank played it cool—telling her he’d be way too nervous to bring the ring overseas. So, when he got down on one knee in front of a beautiful lake in Switzerland, Helena was completely surprised. It was the perfect moment, made even more special by the fact that it caught her totally off guard (just the way Hank hoped it would!).

For their engagement session, they chose Valley Forge Park—basically in their backyard and a spot that’s become special to them over the years. Between the sweeping views, historic stone structures, and the rich autumn tones, it was the perfect backdrop for capturing this sweet season of their lives. They were naturals in front of the camera, constantly making each other laugh and sneaking those little in-between moments that say so much without a word. Toward the end of the session, Helena and Hank’s friend brought over their two dogs so they could get a few cozy, candid photos with their pups—which made the day even more personal and fun.

I couldn’t be more excited for Helena and Hank as they head into this next chapter. If their session is any reflection of their love story—playful, enduring, and deeply rooted—then their wedding day is going to be something really special.

Here are some of my favorite photos from their engagement session!
